About AGA | Urban Agriculture and Community in Avondale Chicago | Avondale Gardening Alliance

Our Mission

Hi Neighbor! Glad you stopped by!

The mission of the Avondale Gardening Alliance is to mobilize neighbors to maximize the benefits of urban agriculture. We strive to create a safer and healthier Avondale, where people share their skills and resources to create a network of support for sustainable gardening practices.  While we are anchored in the Avondale neighborhood of Chicago, we welcome folks from across Chicagoland who share our vision for a better world through urban agriculture and community building!

Avondale Gardening Alliance is a not-for-profit under the fiscal sponsorship of Chicago urban land trust NeighborSpace, the only nonprofit urban land trust in Chicago that preserves and sustains gardens on behalf of dedicated community groups.

The Year with AGA

Through the Avondale Gardening Alliance, you can join your neighbors in free workshops and events throughout the year. We follow the Wheel of the Year, a modern framework of the ancient, cyclical celebrations that mark the ebb and flow of darkness and light over the course of a year. The spokes of the Wheel comprises eight holidays: four solar holidays (the summer and winter solstices, the spring and fall equinoxes) and four fire festivals that mark halfway points between solstice and equinox.

If you’ve been around for a while, you might have noticed that we send our email newsletters to coincide with these spokes on the wheel. :)

Our Community Partners

We’re on a mission to make Avondale the best small town in Chicago, and we’re lucky to have great partners in the neighborhood and the city to support our work!

Community Dinners
Community Dinners functions on the premise that access to wholesome food is not only a human right, but a way to communicate acceptance and love to individuals in a community, and offers free meals on Thursdays at Saint Nicolai Church on Kedzie. AGA’s Mindful Living Garden grows produce that is served at Community Dinners to address food insecurity in Avondale.
Concordia Place
The AGA works with Concordia Place, a nonprofit with economically inclusive childhood and adolescent programming, to support their teen garden, the foundation of their Ruckus Teens entrepreneur programming.

Avondale Mutual Aid
The AGA Mindful Living Garden grows produce specifically for Avondale Mutual Aid to address food insecurity in Avondale.
Avondale Neighborhood Association
The Avondale Neighborhood Association (ANA) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, non-partisan organization with the mission of unifying the Avondale community by preserving history, embracing diversity, and connecting neighbors.
Brands Park Advisory Council
The Brands Park Advisory Council (BPAC) is a volunteer group that works to build strong community ties in Avondale by promoting and maximizing our green spaces as cultural, wellness, and entertainment hubs, where all members of the community can come together.
