Community Chickens

The Avondale Gardening Alliance is working hand in hand with Carl Von Linné Elementary to bring community chickens to the Linné schoolyard. Stay tuned here to learn how students, teen leaders, and Avondale neighbors can get involved with the Avondale community chickens!

We have three orpingtons (buff, lavender, and jubilee), an easter egger, and an olive egger. Chickens lay a variety of egg colors, most commonly white and brown, but also blue, green, pink, cream, and even dark chocolate. The egg's color is determined by the hen's breed and genetics, and the same hen always lays the same color egg. Many hens sing a loud "egg song" after laying, which seems like a proud announcement or relieved "I did it!" to the flock.
